Siemens 1500F Safety PLC and HMI, S120/G120 Drives

M.R. Snyder upgraded an existing Kampf foil separator where an obsolete Siemens Step 7 operating system using an S7400 processor and Masterdrives was upgraded to a new TIA portal system using an S71500F safety processor and Sinamics S120/G120 drives. Existing enclosures were re-utilized, and all new components were field installed. A 19” Comfort Panel was incorporated into the main operator station. Profinet replaced the existing Profibus communications network. M.R. Snyder Company provided a turn-key project for all electrical aspects including demolition, installation, IO checkout, drive commissioning and startup. The project was successfully implemented in a 14 day window (engineers remained on site for 3 days of production support afterward).

Project Description

  • PLC and drive upgrade project to eliminate obsolescence and reliability issues as well as improve system safety features.
  • Machine featured unwind, separator section, winder, and coil cars.
  • An S1517F-PN/DP processor was used to communicate with 13 remote I/O stations, 2 Profinet lasers, 7 Fraba Profinet encoders and 23 drive components.
  • Siemens Sinamics S120 drives were implemented in the system design. The existing common DC Bus was used to receive power from a new Active Line Module with 300KW capacity to provide power to 10 separate motor modules. Encoder feedback from the associated motors was interfaced with SMC30 Encoder Feedback modules connected via Siemens Cliq cables for high-speed transfer of information to the drives. Control over the drives was provided from the aforementioned PLC via Profinet to the corresponding CU320-2 PN control units.
  • The remaining system motors, 11 G120C Siemens drives, were installed in place of the existing drives. Each G120C was connected via Profinet to the system PLC for control and had a local Basic Operator Panel installed. A memory card was installed for program retention in all S120 and G120C drives to support quick commissioning during replacements in the future.
  • Project Value Range: $500K to $1M

 Project Implementation

The project was divided into four sections led by different engineers to enhance efficiency, reduce bottlenecks, and to ensure that a required absence by any individual would not jeopardize the overall project.

  • Demolition/Install
  • IO Checkout
  • Drive Tuning and Setup
  • Equipment/Program Functionality Checks

Technology Utilized

  • Programmed in Siemens TIA Portal environment
  • S71517F Siemens Safety Processor
  • Sinamics S120 drives
